A new world!

February 5, 2010

I have discovered a new world! A new world where i am me and there are no pretensions, no jealous friends who envy you for studying nothing at all and who are hypocrites to the meanest extent that is they would not bother even if you are in dire need. Well, this is a world which is free from all such people and it is a world  “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high” and though it is a world in my imagination but i am of the belief that it can be realized if you really want it to be like that.

The words of  the famous Indian poet Rabindra nath tagore were his vision of a pseudo-nation which was still in the making and a nation of  his dreams. He wanted India to be a nation like he expressed in “Where the mind is without fear”  in Gitanjali and they are as follows:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

Are these words relevant today? They are relevant any day in any country even though we can term it very far from reality but there is nothing in there which cannot be realized and when we talk about till what extent has the poem has been realized a discussion on this issue is worth several pennies and many pounds too.

The very first line that hopes of a place or a nation where the mind is without fear and the head is held high. Yes, in modern India, in free India it is possible no matter how much the visage of India is marked by terror and other different forces a normal Indian can, at any time, declare in front of any number of persons that his/her mind is without fear. An argument against such statement can be raised that  what about so many women who are living in fear of their husbands or family members, what of those laborers who still have a fear of their employers and what about those prisoners and countless others who still live in fear all across India?

Well, this argument too can be tackled well enough by the contention that they have been given proper legal aid and somewhere in their hearts they know that this country despite of its so many faults have provided us with enough legal aid so that the fearlessness of the mind can be restored.

Free knowledge: Is the right of children to free and compulsory education act not been passed by the parliament in 2009 but then the problem of knowledge remains therewith? They have provided us with an act for education but what of knowledge? So when we talk about knowledge it comes out that free minds can seek knowledge from anywhere and everywhere they like and they do it in lieu of capable teachers.

Oh! Now, the world which has not been broken into fragments by narrow domestic walls. Is India such a nation? Majority wants to go with a no but  before any could raise their suspicions i would like to draw their attention to the fact that India as a nation witnesses lots and lots of disputes everyday- water disputes, land/State disputes(Telangana, anyone?) , Hindu-Muslim disputes inter alia but still it is standing and running like a nation! That too in itself is a commendable job where the unity of a nation can be seen in the mess of the armed forces or an university or a railway station where people may distinguish themselves as Punjabi or Marathi or any other classification but one thing they know deep down their hearts and that is- They are Indians at the end of the day and that saves the day and will always do.

Words do come out from the depth of truth here in the land of the Mahatma and there are people who would go at length to remain with the truth no matter what happens( the RTI applicants are a ready example).

Here in India tireless striving do stretches its arms towards perfection( Our brilliant scholars! Ain’t a  lower middle class boy from Kolkata got selected in MIT?)

The clear stream of reason has not lost its way in India even despite of the Habeas corpus case we have the Maneka Gandhi too which reinstates the faith of people in the realm of reason and arbitrariness have got no effect.

My Father, do let my country awake!
